As eyelash extension technicians, we hold a high responsibility to care for our clients and ensure their overall health and happiness. For this reason, there are several procedures and safety measures, like using sensitive eyelash glue, put in place. However, working in such a delicate area, there are bound to be the occasional mishap.
Today, we are talking about red eyes after eyelash extensions! Red eyes can occur from a number of reasons – allergic reactions, low-quality lash extension primers, harsh lash glue, poor lash salon hygiene, and more! Your job as a lash artist is to foresee the potential issues and proactively care for them.
Get ahead of the curve! Before a panicked client calls you at some ungodly hour, learn how to care for red eyes after eyelash extensions with these simple tips.
First and foremost, if the client is complaining of irritation or burning sensation while in the salon, get ahead of the potential ramifications and administer immediate care. Comfort the client and reassure them that this is a normal reaction that can be cared for. Next, provide the client with a cold compress to soothe the irritated area. The cold compress is more or less a band-aid solution for red eyes after eyelash extensions; however, it will comfort the client as the healing process begins.
It may take several hours or even days for red eyes to heal after the initial irritation. To increase client comfort during the healing process topical creams like cortisone cream and Benadryl can be used to manage symptoms. For many, the combination of cold compresses, cortisone cream, and Benadryl is just what they need to bounce back to their former selves.
In most cases, allergy eye drops, cold compresses, Benadryl, and topical creams should resolve the clients red eyes. However, if the red eyes persist longer than two to three days or for extreme allergic reactions the client should seek professional help from a doctor. In addition, you should offer a complimentary lash removal to the client at this point to prevent further eye irritation.
Your client’s health and wellbeing should be your biggest priority when applying eyelash extensions. Tweezers
We said it once, and we’ll say it again, we don’t know where we would be without our eyelash tweezers! This little tool is an extension of your hand and helps you place lash extensions precisely. Don’t sell yourself short – purchase a set of tweezers that allow you to maneuver the delicate area with care.
Listen up, lash babes, this is important! The eyelash glue that you use matters. Glue applied near the eye can cause a host of preventable issues like red eye and allergic reactions. In this case, it is important to have a gentle glue that is safe to use near the eye.
We can’t express to you how important this eyelash application tool is! Primer is used before lash extensions are used to clean the client’s natural lashes of oils and debris. Ultimately, the primer makes the application process smoother. In addition, it increases the longevity of the extensions.
No more pesky fly-away lashes! Eyelash gel pads secure the lower lashes in place to allow for a clean an efficient application. Don’t accidentally snatch a few natural lashes when your applying lash extensions!

As a result, it takes less time for eyelash glue to dry and, in most cases, an efficient dry makes it possible for lash extensions to last longer, and hold up over time.

4 Tips to Cleaning Eyelash ExtensionS
Before your client leaves the shop, make sure they are equipped with these tips on how to clean and maintain their eyelash extensions!
It goes without saying, but your client should use a mild cleanser daily to remove excess debris and oils. Bonus points for recommending an oil-free foaming eyelash cleanser to help your clients refresh their lashes at home! Overall, with regular maintenance, clients can maximize the life of their lash extensions.
Brushing eyelash extensions can work wonders for clients who want to extend the life of their lashes! Daily brushing with a reusable or disposable lash brush can remove any excess debris that gets caught in long lashes throughout the day. In addition, this process can fan out the lashes, fixing any clumped and straggling sections. An easy trick to remembering to brush lash extensions is to brush them at the same time your client would brush their hair or teeth.
We’re all for natural skincare solutions! However, we’re going to have to pass on the oil cleansing method and any other makeup removers and cleansers that use oil to clean out the pores. Ultimately, the oils break down the eyelash extension glue used to adhere the extensions to the natural lash. Take the time to warn your clients of hidden oils found in mascara, face washes, and makeup removers.

How to Clean Eyelash Extensions
Cleaning your client’s eyelash extensions is crucial in extending the life of their luscious look, so we’re giving you step-by-step instructions on how to wash eyelash extensions.
- Remove any eye makeup with an oil-free remover. Wipe away from the lid to prevent any damage, and avoid using cotton balls that may get caught in your lashes.
- Applying a small amount of gently foaming cleanser, gently cleanse the lashes in a circular motion using an eyelash extension cleansing brush.
- Carefully rinse away the cleanser with a water dispenser and pat (not rub!) your lashes dry. Before opening your client opens their eyes, brush through the lashes with a micro brush to reshape the now-clean lashes.

Lash Adhesive
Lash adhesive is lash glue. It's the same damn thing boo. People just want to be fancy and use a bigger word. People as in us and, well, everyone else in our industry! Whether you call it adhesive or glue, it doesn't matter, but what does matter is that you use a good one. Our lash crew broke adhesive, also known as glue, down for you so you can actually understand it and choose the one that works best for you and your clients.
Black or Clear Eyelash Extension Adhesive
Black Eyelash Extension Adhesive
This lash glue is the most common glue. Almost every lash adhesive ingredient list is going to have carbon black, which makes the glue black. Why are they mostly black? Well, a majority of your clients are going to get black eyelash extensions and a black adhesive works perfectly with it. Matchy, matchy, lashes and glue!
Although many lash techs or artists don't use clear lash glue as frequently as they use black lash glue, it's nice to have clear adhesive as part of your eyelash extensions supplies. Lash babe, just be prepared!
For clients who want brown or colored eyelash extensions, clear eyelash glue is the way to go! Clear eyelash extension adhesive will allow a seamless bond between the extension and the natural lash. Additionally, if your client has experienced an allergic reaction to the black lash adhesive, it may be due to the carbon black. Since carbon black is present in all-black lash adhesives, clear eyelash adhesive might just be the best option for them. It's worth a try either way! Drying Time of Lash Adhesive
Fast Drying Time
The Lash Professional loves a fast-drying eyelash extension adhesive! If the lash glue dries in 2 seconds or less, we are a fan. We can work fast AF. But if you're not an experienced lash artist (don't worry we have all been there), don't use it. Just say no! You won't be able to move fast enough to actually adhere the extension or extensions to the natural lash. You'll end up having sucky retention which means you'll end up with a bunch of angry clients. No thanks! Also, keep in mind if you are lashing in low humidity, your fast drying lash adhesive is going to dry uber, uber-fast. Maybe even too fast. If that's the case try a medium drying time lash adhesive. We got tricks!

We are a fan of medium drying lash adhesive because sometimes our favorite fast-drying glue is drying too damn fast. For example, during the month of July in Arizona, our 1-second drying eyelash extension adhesive dries in half a second due to how freakin' dry it is. No Bueno. We like fast, but we like retention better. During these hot months, we turn our love to something that will dry slower. Medium drying lash glue is also great for the lash artist who is still working on their speed. Hey, we've all been there and there is no shame in the game! If this is you...
We all need a slow drying adhesive in our eyelash extension supplies. Why? Because slow-drying adhesive has less of the chemicals that people react to. Slow drying glue is usually a sensitive glue. And we all have at least a few sensitive clients...in more ways than one right?! We don't judge! I already cried twice today.

Different Eyelash Extensions
Okay, so you got your lash adhesive/glue figured out, now you need to know how to pick the right types of eyelash extensions. There are an overwhelming amount of options and lash extension styles, but as you know, we like to break it down piece by piece: what they are made of, curl, thickness and length. Everything is so much easier when you break it down, isn't it? Here's what you should know about types of eyelash extensions!
Mink Lashes vs Silk Lashes vs Synthetic Lashes
So, when we are saying mink, we mean REAL MINK. Yes, from a cute little mink animal. And, when we are saying silk, we are saying silk that comes from the silkworm. As nice as some luxury lashes may sound and look, they're not so "cool" when you think what they are actually made of. Also, mink and silk lashes do tend to appear more fake than synthetic lashes.
From our years and years of experience, we've have had more clients complain about these luxury lashes than we have had clients praise them. Why? For one, mink and silk lashes appear too shinny or too matte and don’t hold a curl like a synthetic lash. A semi-matte finish on synthetic lashes gives the lash line a dense, more natural look. And due to them being synthetic, they are also designed specifically to hold a curl! Basically, go synthetic and you'll be happy! You also won't have to think about all that weird stuff like what they're doing to those cute little animals and how worm stuff is on your client's eyes.
Eyelash Extension Curls
Have you heard of a J curl eyelash extension? J curl lashes aren’t used often anymore, but if you decide to give them a try you will be jumping for freakin' joy you did! This curl is specifically intended for the client who has stick straight lashes and for the ones who like that ultra-natural look. Hey, there is still some of us out here looking for that natural look! Maybe J is too natural for your client's. Then step up your lash extension styles and try a B curl. This curl has a bit more curl than a J curl but is still a great option for the client with tricky straight lashes and want a natural look. Ah, the options!
Okay, so you and your clients aren't into those natural curls, then C, CC, and D were made for you! These different eyelash extensions are probably the lashes you will use most often anyway. What can we say? People like drama! C curl lashes are intended for clients with a slight curl in their natural lash and will help create an even more open-eye effect. D curl lashes are very similar, just curlier! They are intended for a client with a slight-dramatic natural curl who wants that extra dramatic look! And as you probably guess, CC is right in the middle of these two curls. All three of these curls will give your client a very visible curled effect. Hey, there is something for everyone!
So how do you choose the right diameter? How do you pick the right diameter for your client? One easy trick is to match the diameter to the client’s natural lash and if they want something more dramatic go slightly thicker. We want to avoid going too think because we want to keep our client's natural eyelashes healthy. Why? So they can keep coming back to you, duh!
The trick with eyelash extension length is to only go 2-3 mm longer than the clients natural lash. There are eyelash extension lengths up to 17mm, but if your client’s natural lashes are 8mm long and you throw on 17mm lashes they will not last. That long extension will add way too much weight to the natural lash and the poor baby just won't be able to hold it up for very long. The most important thing to look for when shopping for adhesive is a brand or brands with a range of options. There are so many reasons why having a range of different adhesives is important and I'm about to lay it all out for you, along with some handy-dandy links that will take you straight to products.
Things to keep an eye out for when shopping for eyelash extension adhesive
The Lash Professional Adhesives are all fume-free.
A lot of clients have sensitive eyes, and some even build up an intolerance for lash glues. Usually, sensitive glues have a slower dry-time, because clients are allergic to the bonding agent which makes glue dry quickly. So, the slower the dry-time, the less bonding agent in the adhesive. If this sounds like your client, be sure to have a sensitive option on hand. We tend to get calls from clients trying to buy sensitive glue to bring to their lash artists, so take that initiative to invest in adhesive so your client doesn't have to!

Another great adhesive to have in your toolbox is clear adhesive. Some clients have a sensitivity or allergy to the carbon black ingredient in black glues, so sensitive adhesive with this ingredient isn't right for them. However, you can get around this by tossing out the carbon black ingredient all together and investing in a clear glue. Most clear glues have the same dry time as a pro glue, which is .5 seconds to 1 second.

Last but not least, a good brand is one that caters to a lash artist's skill level as well as a client's needs. The quicker drying glues will be for more advanced lash artists, while the glues with a longer dry-time are for those who are less experienced. However, a good lash artist can adapt to any glue necessary. For example, different glues are better for different humidity levels (the product description will almost always detail this for you), so if you're a lash artist going between Arizona and Florida, you should be versed in glues with different dry-times. However, you can't jump into the deep end right away, so start with a glue with a slower dry-time if you're new to lashes.
